Catalonia celebrates its autonomous status on September 11th. You'll see streets and balconies covered with Catalan flags, and enthusiastic demonstrations in central squares like Placa Catalunya, Ronda Sant Pere and Plaza Urquinaona. Depending on your point of view pro or anti-Catalan nationalism you'll find it an invigorating or a depressing experience. There are normally minor clashes between pro independence protesters, who declare their right to full self government and independence from Spain and the police during the course of the night. It is a free event.
