When you reach the small squre where the Church of Santa Annna lies, you always find lots of people strolling around, resting and just generally observing. The square is surrounded by 19th-century buildings which give it a lovely atmosphere, right in the heart of the old quarter of the city. In the 11th century, the church was part of a convent that had been built outside the city's walls, and the architecture is a mixture of Romanesque (the first part) and Gothic (the later additions). During the Middle Ages, one of the gateways to the city was in Santa Anna Street.
