This theatre is located on the site of Barcelona's first theatre, Teatre de la Santa Creu, which opened in 1596 and began holding regular opera seasons in 1750. After a fire in 1788, it was rebuilt and took the name of Teatre Principal, putting on plays in Catalan. It has recently reopened, with the latest technology, following a period of closure, and has 800 seats. The theatre has put on various kinds of shows, including Broadway hits produced in Cataluña, featuring Spanish actors, singers and dancers. It is located in the emblematic, lively Ramblas, near Barcelona's old port.
