This popular festival is celebrated in honor of la Verge de la Mercè (the Virgin of Mercy) on September 24. The Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) becomes one big party venue for an entire week. Events include concerts, art exhibitions and traditional shows like the dance of the 'gigants' (huge carnival figures), 'sardanas' (Catalonia's national dance), 'castellers' (human pyramids) and the 'correfoc' (demons in costume who run through the streets setting off fireworks). Another attraction worth visiting is the Mercat del Llibre Vell i d'ocasió (second-hand book fair) on Passeig de Gràcia. The event is free for all.
